The Story of ‘BROTHER TIA’
Tia was an 8-year-old male dog who lived at CMU. He was well-known for his tradition of welcoming the new students at the Chiang Mai University’s annual 14km freshmen run. Every year “Brother Tia" would join them in running 14-kilometers up the mountain called Doi Suthep. At this point, many people would keep an eye out for Tia, wearing his dog gear running up the mountain. Photos of the event showed Tia sprinting full speed in front of all the runners, despite his tiny legs! He became a favourite of CMU students and his antics were followed by many on social media.
Tia was very much loved by Chiang Mai University community.
Originally, Tia had lived with his owner in a house not far from the Chiang Mai University campus, so this allowed Tia to visit and play at CMU regularly, until he refused to return to his own home.
Usually Tia lived now at the faculty of the ‘Computer Science Department’ but he often wandered about the campus to join the students on their activities.
On May 4, 2020, Tia disappeared. This caused students to search for him and a daily report was made at the police station. Several days after Tia disappeared a dog’s body stuffed in a plastic bag and left in the woods along the roadside was discovered. It was confirmed that it was ‘Tia’ by scanning the microchip embedded in his body. The students then turned to WDT to help investigate Tia’s death!
Officers at Chang Puak Police Station held a meeting with WDT to discuss the investigation procedure and collection of evidence including witnesses & surveillance camera footage which will be evaluated for a week before charging the alleged offender. Later, the Chang Phueak Police Station investigative team checked the CCTV cameras. It was found that the person who took Tia out of Chiang Mai University was a police sergeant with the Border Patrol Police. He later confessed that he intended to take Tia out for a ride, but he had an accident because a car hit him and killed Tia. After that, an investigation was conducted until charges could be laid, namely the offence of animal cruelty and the offence of theft at night using a vehicle
An autopsy of Tia’s body contradicted the testimony from the alleged offender, prompting WDT to accuse him of animal torture and dumping of ‘Brother Tia’s’ carcass! Sadly … Tia had been beaten to death!
